Sun protection is the only step in skincare where the science is settled. Daily, broad-spectrum coverage, reapplied every two hours of exposure, will do more for the skin's long-term appearance than any treatment ever made. We do not have anything more interesting to say about this than that.
Hae Defense uses non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as its only UV filters. The fluid texture is achieved through a careful emulsion — we tested forty-three iterations before settling on this one. The tint is from iron oxides in two shades; it is calibrated to look like skin on most Northeast Asian complexions, and reasonable on others. There is no white cast.
To the base we add Ganghwa mugwort distillate, Centella asiatica extract, and a small amount of niacinamide. None of these is a sunscreen. They are added because zinc oxide can be slightly drying, and the mugwort balances the formulation.
Worn in the morning, after Mool Cream. A fingertip's worth across face, neck, and the backs of the hands. Reapply every two hours of sunlight, or after swimming. The mineral filters will not break down in the bottle.

- 1Complete Steps One through Four of the ritual. The skin should feel settled and almost dry.
- 2Dispense a fingertip's worth — about two centimeters — into the palm.
- 3Apply across face, neck, ears, and the backs of the hands. Stipple, do not rub.
- 4Reapply every two hours of sun exposure, or immediately after swimming.
A note: the daily quantity that produces SPF50+ in lab conditions is approximately a quarter teaspoon for the face alone. Most people use a third of this.
