02 — 의식 Four steps

The ritual.

Four steps. Twice daily. Without rush. We design our range around this practice and recommend you keep to it — not because the products require it, but because the time itself is the point.

A practice is not a rule. It is a small, repeated act, performed with attention. The Joseon-era diaries are full of these — the steeping of medicinal teas at a certain hour, the brushing of the teeth with salt in a particular direction, the rinsing of the face with cool well-water at sundown. None of these were efficient. All of them were intentional.

The Soonji practice is four steps, performed in the same order morning and evening, with two seasonal adjustments. It will take you between three and seven minutes. We assume you have that. If you do not, we suggest skipping a product before skipping the time.

I. 정화
The cleansing step — oil warmed in the palms

Step one

Cleanse

Warm a single coin (about the size of a Korean five-hundred-won) of Bidan Cleansing Oil between dry palms. With dry skin, massage in slow circles — forehead, cheeks, the bridge and sides of the nose, the chin, the soft places under the jaw. A full minute. Emulsify with lukewarm water. Rinse twice.

In the morning, this step may be skipped on days when the skin feels settled — many of our customers in summer go directly to Step Two. In winter we recommend both passes.

II. 에센스
The essence step — a pressed palm against damp cheek

Step two

Prepare

With skin still damp from rinsing, pour three drops of Yul Essence into the palm. Press — do not rub — into the skin in slow upward motions, starting at the jaw and working toward the temples. Pay attention to the texture: the essence will absorb in about forty seconds. Wait for it.

Damp skin matters here. The essence builds on the water already present; on dry skin, the absorption pattern is uneven and the next step will sit on top rather than work in. If you must apply on dry skin, mist first with cool water.

III. 치료
The serum step — amber liquid drawn from a dropper

Step three — evening only

Treat

One press of Geum Serum, no more. Distribute across both palms; tap gently across the face, neck, and the soft beneath the eye. Reserve the serum for the evening practice — in the morning, the skin is best left to its own quiet repair.

A common mistake: applying serum until it feels rich. It is not meant to feel rich. The active concentrations are high; the formulation is intentionally minimal in finish. If you find your skin asking for more, the answer is Step Four.

IV. 봉인
The sealing step — a small amount of cream on a fingertip

Step four

Seal

A pea of Mool Cream, warmed and pressed into the skin. Finish by holding both palms still against the face for a slow breath in and out. This pause is the most important second of the practice. It seals the skin; it also seals the time.

In the morning, follow this step with Hae Defense SPF50+ — a single fingertip's worth, distributed across face and neck and the back of the hands. Reapply every two hours of sunlight; we will tell you nothing else about sun protection because nothing else needs to be said.

Weekly매주

One evening, set aside.

A single addition to the weekly practice. Sundays are our suggestion, but the day matters less than the consistency.

Weekly — 비단 마스크

Bidan Silk Mask

Apply between Step Two and Step Three on a Sunday evening. A thicker layer than a serum — about a half-teaspoon, distributed across the face. Leave on for the duration of a long bath. Rinse, or press the residue in as a treatment. Resume the practice the following day.

A note

Why four steps.

It is fashionable in Korean beauty to speak of ten-step practices. They sell more product; they do not produce more skin. We have studied the formularies of the Joseon court — there are not ten steps in those records, nor in the practices of any hanbang clinic still operating today. There are at most five: cleanse, balance, treat, seal, protect. We have collapsed two of these into a single object (Hae Defense protects and partly seals), and made the rest discrete.

If you are coming to us from a longer routine, we suggest you spend a week using only Steps One and Four before adding the others. You will find that the skin needs less than you have been giving it.
